Osteoarthritis & Homeopathy

HOMEO-MANAGEMENT WITH A LIVE CASE AND PREVENTION

What is Osteoarthritis?

One of the commonest diseases that the human suffer from; in India, about 80 million persons suffer.

Osteoarthritis  is one of the most common type of ‘arthritis’ where ‘cartilages’ of bones of a joint are first affected and then the ‘ligaments’ around the joint. Here one must know four special terms to deal with the subject.

Arthritis is a condition that causes pain and inflammation of a bony joint.

Cartilages are the soft paddings at the end of bones which act as cushions during movements of the joint.

Ligaments are the external tough band-like multiple structures that keep joints bound from all sides.

Tendons are rope-like ends of muscles that remain attached to the bone.

What are causes of Osteoarthritis ?

When cartilage-linings of bones in a joint are eroded and thinned out due to prolonged use or some other reasons, the tendon and ligaments around the joint have to work harder, as a result pain, stiffness and swelling around the joint, i.e., osteoarthritis is seen.

Following are the risk factors of the disease

1)Old joint injury may often be the seat of attack;

2)The joints overused due to some profession may be the same;

3)Sometimes worn-out joints due to ageing may be affected;

4)Hereditary factors also play a role there;

5)Bony deformities of congenital nature;

6)Stressful life with inadequate sleep, smoking and drinking habits may increase the risk too;

What are the signs and symptoms of Osteoarthritis?

1)Joint pain & stiffness

2)Swelling & tenderness

3)Crackling sound

4)In morning after night rest, stiffness increases which gradually settles down to a low level within half an hour with movement

5)Impairment of movement

6)Creation of osteophytes

7)Burning sensation of muscles and tendons around the affected joint

8)Cramps in the muscles and tendon

9)Sometimes, water may accumulate in the joint space

Mrs. Sen showed remarkable improvement; her uric acid level was above higher level (8 mg./dL); but she looks much active and jubilant; The same medicine was administered up to 0/6 with intermittent period of wait and watch; she put up about 3 kgs. in 4 months. Her swelling had gone after 2nd prescription; movement of right knee joint improved a lot but at wane of last dose, there was a tendency to increase in the trouble ; So, a dose of Sulphur 10M was given. Thereafter Mrs. Sen did not appear any more.

Prevention:

Osteoarthritis is basically a disease of wear and tear of joints; and possibly of error of metabolism also. Persons having a hereditary tendency of the disease should be careful against possible over exertion. They should keep in mind, walking, jogging and running are good exercises but they must not be overdone. As to diet, they should avoid taking foods increasing the uric acid level, like meat, poultry, pulses, cauliflower, pea, mushroom and other foods rich in purine. Though uric acid is directly connected with gout, yet, in practice, it is seen to be associated with arthritis too. Further, one can read and study “Control Uric Acid” under menu “General Advices” of this website.
