ULCERATIVE COLITIS

CAUSES, SIGNS & SYMPTOMS, HOMEO-MANAGEMENT AND PREVENTION

What is Ulcerative Colitis?

It is a form of inflammatory bowel disease affecting the colon, i.e., large intestine mainly in its inner-most wall as disclosed by the Colonoscopy. The affected part lies in a single block, i.e., affected parts do not lie diffusely with intervention of normal tissue in between. [differentiating point with Crohn’s disease which affects the entire thickness of the wall with diffused cluster with normal tissue in between and over any portion of the digestive tract]

What are the causes of Ulcerative Colitis ?

No definitive cause yet ascertained; research says it may be the result of the interaction of the genes of the patient, his immune system and the flora(bacteria, virus, fungi, other microbes) of the intestines, that is, it is an altered immune reaction of the body. So, the disease is idiopathic in nature; however, it is noted to run families but no clear pattern of inheritance is observed.

What are the signs and symptoms of the Ulcerative Colitis?

  1. Frequent loose bowel movement with urgent need

  2. Red blood (free) with stool

  3. Abdominal pain

  4. Sores in mouth

  5. Skin problems

  6. Arthritis

  7. Eye problems affecting vision

How are patients with Ulcerative Colitis managed with Classical Homeopathy ?

General Discussion:

Therapeutically there are a lot of medicines that may be used for patients with Ulcerative colitis, like Muriatic acid, Lachesis, Acid nit.,  Arsenicum alb. etc.  However, it may be mentioned, therapeutic aims at managing acute stage of the disease only; since this website is dedicated to manage chronic patients constitutionally with classical homeopathy, we will take up a case or two of chronic in nature.

Case Study 1:

Sri N. Gopalan aged 55+ reported the following:

Chief complaints:

1)He has been suffering from bouts of attack of cramp in the abdomen with urgent need to go to closet for last 9 months ; each bout stays for 3-4 hrs.

2)Stool slimy, liquid,  frequent with deep red blood followed by severe prostration;

3)Such attack comes about 3 - 4 times  a month for last 9 months;

4)Sore in the mouth for last 6 months; takes enough vitamin tab. but no relief;

5)He also suffers from double vision for last 12 months; consulted spec-specialist who changed the power of lens but in vain;

Past history :

1)Patient had not suffered from any mentionable disease in the past.

Family history:

1)Father had ulcerative colitis, but now is OK;

2)One paternal uncle suffered from Crohn’s disease which ultimately turned into a malignant form and killed him;

3)Grandma died of Colorectal cancer;

Mental General:

1)In young age had tendency to suicide;

2)Long suffered from insomnia;

3)History of long unhappy life;

4)Likes music & dancing++;

5)Highly sympathetic to the poor;

Physical Generals:

1)Craves meat, egg, milk++;

2)High aversion to salt;

3)Fond of taking bhujia types of snacks daily evening;

4)Appetite: Less;

5)Thirst: OK; takes about 2 lit. water a day;

Look of the patient:

Brownish face with many moles over throat, shoulder;

1st Prescription:

Carcinosin200/2doses to be take in 2 consecutive morning in empty stomach; Take just one TSF after mixing 1 dose with a cup of water;

Advice:

1)Get a diagnostic Colonoscopy[for clinical confirmation of the extent damage of the tissue of colon, if any, and also to exclude malignancy]

2)To avoid meat, egg  and bhujia type snacks altogether; In place of bhujia take gram, nut fried over dry sand;

3)To start taking little amount of fruits and green salad with dinners regularly; do not take large amount in first go, it may cause severe diarrhea;

4)To drink water as he used to do;

5)Review: after 3 weeks;

2nd Prescription:

Patient turned up as advised and reported that during last 3 weeks there was only one attack and that too with mild intensity; no SOS medicine required, subsided normally within about an hour.

He was given supportive medicine for next 3 weeks and advised to follow advices as given earlier;

Follow Up:

Patient reported marked improvement. He was better in all respects. No attack of fresh bout so far;

Carcinosin 1000/1 dose; to be taken as before; other advice as before;

Finally, the patientwas released after 3rd Review without any medicine since he did not require any.

PREVENTION:

Since the disease is partly genetic in nature and an auto-immune disease, no specific preventive measure is there. However, all the general measures to keep the body-immunity intact should be strictly followed by those who might be members of family with such disease-history.Please read the info under sub-menu ‘Body Immunity’ under menu ‘Patienets’ Corner’ of this site.
